The magic of not taking it personally
By Coach Colleen | March 15, 2006
If you are like me, sometimes I think the universe revolves around me. In my reality, I am the center of my universe. Where I get in trouble is when I think I am at the center of another person’s universe.
How this translates is that when they say how badly they feel, I take it personally. It’s all about me! I must be the cause of their unhappiness.
I eventually come to my senses and say to myself ‘STOP!’ This is theirs not mine. Here’s an example. My partner has said ‘I’m unhappy with my life.’ I have immediately jumped to the conclusion that she is unhappy with me. In less than a nanosecond, I can come up with 10 different stories that all revolve around me. But, she feels bad, not me. If I stop and let that be, not try and fix it, just give empathy, both our lives work a lot better.
Each of us feels down and unhappy about our lives on occasion. Funny thing, it most often doesn’t mean we are unhappy about out our entire lives - just a small part, at that very moment in time. After lunch, all can be different.
Don’t steal center stage. Letting others be the center of their universe is being respectful of their ability to be the leader of their own lives.
