Fundamentals - Baseball, life, and love

By Coach Colleen | August 31, 2006

We went to a Seattle Mariner’s baseball game the other night. I said ‘He forgot the fundamentals’ with each error. That happened at least five or six times. To me that’s amazing at that level of play.

Then last night I did an exercise about the fundamentals of what I do well in life. It is funny, these are the same things I love doing. Sometimes, I forget them and try to do things that I think I should do. Funny thing is that I get frustrated because I consistently don’t do well. I’m a quick learner and smart, so I give myself grief that I’m not the master of everthing I do.

It’s delightful when I remember that I have a specific skill set of fundamentals that make me uniquely me. If I continually work on mastering my fundamentals and not acquiring other fundamentals I’ll be the master of my life and not the victim of circumstance. No pity parties for me.
