Hormones versus True Love

By Coach Colleen | November 16, 2006

Don’t interrupt your life by reacting to hormones.

We’ve all done it. OK, I should only speak for myself. I’ve let my hormones run amuck and steal the day or in some cases steal years from my life.

What! you say. It’s true. One of my college relationships lasted five years. I let my hormones rule me and, I’m sorry to say, my need/desire to have someone to do things with.

I was in that relationship for 5 years.

After about a year, I kept asking myself why am I in this relationship. Then we would go out and do something fun. Then the excitement would die down, and I’d again ask myself “Why am I here?”

This is a clue, my friend. A clue that I did not take. I had lots of fun times. But, as I look back all the exciting things we did were centered around what my partner wanted, not what I wanted.

It’s a funny irony that we broke up when I went back to graduate school, and I put what I wanted first. It didn’t take very long for him to pack up and move on.

Don’t let your immediate hormones rule your life. If they get the better of you in the short run, re-remember who you are and what you want in YOUR life.
